First Horse

First Horse is an original acrylic painting on an 18" x 20" canvas — a portrait of a horse that is painted as much from feeling as from observation. The horse fills the canvas head-on, its broad face turned slightly toward us, its dark eyes steady and soft and entirely present. The face is white and warm gold, the nose deep grey-blue, the muzzle painted with the kind of loose confidence that makes every brushstroke count. The mane cascades down both sides — a flowing river of golden yellow and cream, shot through with unexpected strokes of turquoise and deep blue and a flash of purple, giving the whole portrait a luminous, almost mythic quality.
