Dara

Dara is an original acrylic and mixed media painting on a large 48" x 36" repurposed canvas — a painting on a scale that matches its ambition. She stands with her back to us, arms raised and open, her face lifted toward a vast ice formation that dominates the left side of the canvas. The ice wall is real — actual fabric, built up and sculpted on the canvas surface into deep folds and ridges of white and pale grey, dimensional and tactile, its texture catching light and shadow the way real ice does. It curves above her like a cave or a wave, ancient and elemental. Her dress is also real: rich cobalt blue fabric, draped and adhered to the canvas, its deep folds spreading outward in a wide, sweeping train that pools across the frozen ground — the blue of the dress bleeding into the painted ice beneath her, the painted water stretching into the distance on either side. The sky behind her is a warm cerulean blue, striated with golden orange and amber at the horizon — a sunset burning behind the cold. The contrast is electric: warmth and ice, fabric and sky, one woman and something enormous. Pure paint, pure fabric, pure ice. A one-of-a-kind original by Branka, created once and never again.
