A woman in a black and white striped dress stands against a black and white striped background, the vertical lines of the wall and the horizontal and diagonal lines of the garment colliding and merging in a composition that is both disorienting and utterly compelling. The figure — shown from the shoulders down, her hat brim just visible at the top — becomes almost architectural, her form dissolving into and re-emerging from the surface of pattern around her. The dress cascades in pleated layers to the left, its lines shifting direction at every fold. There is no colour here, only contrast, rhythm, and the power of pure line.
